Read or Watch: Atonement

I am a huge fan of the Atonement . I saw it at the movies  and fell in love many years ago. There are three things I particularly love about the movie and book: the script , the actors and the costumes. On the way home from England last month, I read the novel written by Ian McEwan . I have never really read the book after the movie and enjoyed it, as I get way to stuck on the movie version and end up not finishing it. BUT, I really really loved the book. And the movie only served to enhance the book and the heartbreaking story of two people in love.

The book (and the movie) are broken up into 4 parts: A fateful summers day; Robbie as a British soldier in France; Briony serving her duty as a trainee nurse and a dying Briony's attempting to atone for her sins.

Keira and James give amazing performances as the couple so deeply in love it hurts. Once they declare their love it is set and there can be no turning back for them, whatever the circumstances or distance.

Now, onto the costumes. Most of you will be familiar with that emerald green dress. Jacqueline Durran  did an amazing job with each and every costume on each and every character. It felt authentic in every era and certainly did justice to the vivid descriptions in the book.

I highly recommend BOTH the movie and the book. They compliment each other beautifully and will have you dreaming of a summer romance in 1930

Inspiration: amazing paper illustration

Some people are so clever. Check out Yulia's paper illustrations. I remember quilling with my mum when I was younger. There was a whole lot of flowers and leaves and not much else... It really was quite fun, but this is taking it to the extreme. If you want to see her portfolio go to her website here. You won't be disappointed, I promise!

I'm loving this London one..

Freebie Friday: sorbetto tank top

I recently came across this freebie from Collette Patterns. This simple tank top looks quick and easy to make and also looks really flattering, which is always a bonus! I think I will stitch one of these up for summer out of a lovely soft fabric... ahhhh summer....

You can download the pattern and check out some great sewing mojo on the Collette Patterns blog.

{made} teddy bear quilt

A while back (almost 2 years ago...) I made this quilt for my brand new nephew, Oliver. I think this one was my second quilt I ever made. As Ollie came a little early (like, 3 months!), I had to finish it off quick smart. Some of the original design had to be left out, due to time, but I was pretty happy with the result anyway. Thanks again to my Mum for doing the quilting... Look at all that stippling, so much detail that I don't think I would have had the patience for. What would I do without her!

The pattern was out of a magazine and I can't for the life of me remember which one... It was 2 years ago remember! Those little teddy bears are so sweet and they were no trouble to stitch up and applique.

Anyway, what do you think?

{made} simple pleasures mini quilt

I made this mini quilt a while back for Nan's birthday. The pattern is from the Hatched and Patched book Simple Pleasures. My home is my haven. I think this is the  first quilt I have ever actually finished all by myself, even though it is teeny tiny :). Anyway, just wanted to share.

Paris: some photos

Time to share some of the most famous Paris places. Paris was really nice, even if the metro smelt like wee! But it was really special to cruise around and see some of the many places that make Paris a top tourist destination!

The three Eiffel Tower photos are at day, night and night with the twinkle lights. The lights come on every hour and the crowds go mad for it (me included)...

Freebie Friday: sew it pretty

Happy Friday! I stumbled over this blog and it's one of my new favourites. The how joyful blog has so many great things on there and then I found her wedding blog! I don't know how she fits all that craft in her day... Three hours later I realised I was supposed to be doing something productive! Kindly, Joy has offered one of her designs for you to download - find it here. Now all you have to do is pick a colour!

Print it out and frame it for your sewing room - or for the more adventurous, maybe embroidery? Go on, I dare you!
